The Village

Burtle is the often described as the most friendly village on the Somerset Levels. So as you would expect you will always receive a Warm Welcome.

We are situated in the heart of The Vale of Avalon which is a unique conservation area, rich in wildlife and stunning landscapes.

At either end of the vale are the striking mounts of Glastonbury Tor and Brent Knoll with open views of the Mendips and the Polden Hills.

It is common to see roe deer, badgers and foxes and there are otters, mink and many other types of animals which can be seen if you are careful.

Buzzards and other birds of prey are easily spotted and there is an abundance of other large and small species of bird. Look out for the large flocks of mute swans grazing in the fields and winter visitors such as the bewick swan and lapwing.

The Village church is dedicated to St Philip and St James and was built by Richard Carver in 1838/9, it stands in the centre of the village. The recently renovated Village hall serves the wider community with many social gatherings over the year ranging from coffee mornings to live bands. Visitors are always made welcome at any public events that are taking place at the time.

The historic City of Wells and the ancient towns of Glastonbury , Bridgwater  and Street are each only 15-20 minutes away by car but the surrounding area is also ideal for cycling and walking.

There are many footpaths around the village and you can walk to the nature reserves at Catcott Moor where you can see an abundance of water birds during the winter. The levels provide both easy and interesting cycling. You can ride to various nature reserves through some wonderful countryside and then further up to the Polden Hills where you have amazing views of the levels below.

The agriculture in the area is predominantly dairy and beef cattle with many farmers choosing to have some older traditional breeds so don’t be surprised to see some Highland Cattle in the fields.
