Burtle Church celebrates 175 years
[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]In May 1840 the Bath Chronicle reported a most auspicious occasion in Burtle when a large gathering of clergy, gentry and inhabitants of the neighbourhood gathered at St Philip and St James Church for its consecration .
To mark the 175 years since then, Burtle Church held a flower festival and display of photographs and memorabilia over the May Bank holiday weekend. Flower arrangements depicted different aspect of village life and photographs, dating from the 1880s, showed the interior and exterior of the church, weddings held at Burtle, Junior Church, the School, Harvest Home, the railway and Burtle Silver Band. Memorabilia included the old bier and a crocheted child’s petticoat, made by Queen Mary, and given the Somerset Needlework Guild in 1916 and later donated to Burtle Church for auction at a centenary fete to raise money for a Church Hall.
A new booklet, compiled at the suggestion of and help of Edington and District History Society, on the History of the Church, including a plan of the churchyard and list of memorials was for sale and refreshments were available.
A Service of Songs of Praise on Sunday evening led by Rev Stephen Lynas concluded this very successful anniversary.
The Friends of Burtle Church would like to thank all those who helped in any way, flower arrangers, cake makers and those who loaned items for display and of course all who visited and bought the history booklet.
The History Booklet, price £3:50, will be available at Café Burtle or contact Alison Everett
